How will it work for me?
Supported distance learning is a simple, flexible way to study. We supply you with the study materials and support online – all you need is the time and motivation to study.
Your study materials
About two weeks before your course starts, you’ll receive an email and study pack with your username and password to access our virtual learning environment (VLE).
Your study pack contains copies of material that’s provided on the VLE, including textbooks and other resources (such as CDs or DVDs).
Along with the study material, you’ll find information on how to access the VLE, assignments, exams, proposed study schedule and any face-to-face learning opportunities.
Planning your study
Distance learning requires a time commitment for your studies. The number of hours varies depending on your course, but is likely to be around 10 to 20 hours a week.
Before you start a course, see how many hours you’ll need to study. Next, work out how you could fit your hours in around your weekly commitments – such as work and family.
The best way to succeed in your studies is to plan a manageable set routine each week.
Online interaction and learning
You’ll have lots of opportunities to interact with your tutors and fellow students through the VLE, with dedicated discussion forums. Some courses feature self assessment quizzes and other interactive materials to help your learning.
Face-to-face teaching
Most of our courses offer some element of face-to-face learning. While not compulsory, these sessions give you a valuable opportunity to meet your tutors and fellow students.
But don’t worry if you can’t attend. You won’t be penalised, as all presentations are available as online downloads.
Full details of face-to-face learning sessions, along with your assignments and exams will be supplied through the VLE.
