Sustainability for Real Estate Investment short course

At CEM we have a great deal of expertise in the critical issue of sustainability to help contribute to greater understanding within the profession. As industry and wider public awareness of climate change and sustainable development has increased, we have looked for solutions to the seemingly intractable problems of achieving economic growth and social stability within the limitations of the Earth’s environmental resources. Our short course in sustainability for Real Estate Investment, which was developed in conjunction with Legal & General, is primarily designed for people employed in the real estate and construction industry, such as investors, developers, fund or asset property managers, building surveyors, project managers, quantity surveyors and facilities managers.

Award details

If you successfully complete all elements of the course, you will be awarded a minimum of 65 CPD hours and 6 credit points towards the CEM Framework for Lifelong Learning Certificate. The course provides the requisite knowledge that underpins the RICS mandatory sustainability competency.

Entry requirements

You should:

  • be interested in or have experience in sustainability and/or be employed in the real estate and construction industry;
  • have English language proficiency.

Learning methods

All learning materials are available on demand online and work is submitted electronically.

The course is divided into three sections: Strategy, Development and In use. Information is issued in 15 separate knowledge files. These contain: a topic precis, an assessment to record your 'attendance', essential reading documents, audio and/or video file recordings of experts in the field, and useful reference documents for review purposes.

An introduction to how forward thinking investors are addressing and developing their portfolios to protect value against sustainability risk.

Benchmarking

The process of establishing information on property portfolios in order to ‘baseline’ future sustainability targets.

The physical impact that climate change will have on property value.

Global market take-up

What the global sustainability market is doing.

Development

Sustainability and the planning process

Outlining how planning is shaping sustainability in the development of property in the UK.

Contaminated land

Highlighting the environmental considerations for acquisition and property management.

Sustainability and building refurbishment

Looking at development of existing commercial property in the light of sustainability.

Energy 1

Carbon literacy for commercial property.

Energy 2

Carbon literacy for commercial property.

Waste and water

Update on environmental considerations for waste and water strategies for development in existing commercial property.

Supply chain and materials selection issues for development.

In use

Sustainability and building management

The crucial role of facilities management in ensuring sustainability in property portfolios.

Legal considerations and green leases

Investigates the increasing litigation and legal impacts that sustainability is having on the industry and best practice on green leases.

A look at some of the main cost elements associated with sustainability through the building lifecycle and development process.

Valuations

Considers the impact of sustainability on property worth through the valuation process.

Assessment

Assignments must be completed for each knowledge file. There is also a case study assessment where delegates are required to investigate sustainability within their current work context. After each course section (Strategy, Development and In use) delegates will be required to complete a further piece of written work reflecting on the implications of the course on their current job.
