Technical skills in M&E QS practice
Introduction
This module has been designed to introduce you to the subject of M&E QS practice. It is suitable for people who have a basic background understanding of this field. It aims to familiarise you with the areas of tendering, estimating and measurement for building services.
The module is divided into two parts; the first part introduces you to tendering and measurement in relation to mechanical and electrical work. The second part looks at the measurement and estimating of more complex building services. In the first part you will learn about tendering for engineering work, the measurement of drainage, gas and mechanical and electrical installations, bill preparation and pricing for mechanical and electrical work. In the second part you will learn about the measurement of ventilation systems, air conditioning systems and builders work, estimating, tendering and cost planning for building services.

Aims
The aim of the module is to introduce you to the area of M&E QS practice and to develop your knowledge of tendering, estimating and pricing in relation to M&E works as well develop your measurement skills in this area.
Learning outcomes
SUBJECT KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
After studying this module you should be aware of and understand:
- the principles of tendering and estimating in the context of building services;
- the basic principles for pricing simple building services work;
- the measurement of building services work.
SUBJECT SPECIFIC SKILLS
After studying this module you should be able to:
- measure and price domestic building services installations and associated builders' work, and prepare a bill of quantities;
- describe the tendering procedure followed by a contractor and examine the factors the contractor and subcontractor consider when preparing their tenders;
- understand how dimension paper and Standard Method of Measurement 7 (SMM7) are used;
- discuss how rainwater and waste water disposal systems work;
- discuss how domestic hot and cold water services work;
- identify and describe the principal components of a domestic scale hot water heating system;
- identify and describe the principal components of a domestic electrical installation from the main to the internal distribution board;
- identify and describe the principal components of a domestic gas installation;
- describe the bill preparation process;
- describe how bill rates would be used to calculate the price of variations to the works including the calculation of pro rata rates.

As you study this module you also will learn to:
