John Story
Course Leader MSc in Property Investment
John Story has worked in the Property Industry all his professional life. He trained with a Liverpool-based Firm of Chartered Surveyors, Sutcliffe & Co, and once qualified (through the College) he travelled overland to India and then on to Western Australia. In WA he worked for Justin Seward & Co which, at that time, was part of the Richard Ellis Group (now CBRE). During his four and a half years with Justin Seward he carried out many and various valuations in Perth and elsewhere in WA, as well as having experience in agency and auctions.
He returned to the UK and joined Debenham Tewson & Chinnocks (now DTZ) in the City Office where he worked for five years on a variety of general practice projects. In 1981 he moved to Unilever and took on responsibility for the management of Unilever’s Pension Fund property portfolio. This was outsourced in 2002, and he moved on to become Head of Property for Unilever UK. He left the Company at the end of 2007.
In early 2008, John joined the College of Estate Management, on a part-time basis, as Course Director for the MSc in Property investment (having been the External Course Director for the previous 15 years – John was one of the first cohort of students to complete the Diploma in Property Investment in 1989).
He is, in addition, a member of the Advisory Board of a fund investing in climate change-proofed commercial property and a consultant to IPD.
John served on the Board of Management of the Investment Property Forum, established the IPF’s education programme, published a report on the standards and skills required by investment property professionals, and currently chairs the IPF’s Academic Committee. He is a Life Member of the IPF.
He chairs the Property Industry Alliance (RICS, IPF, BPF, BCO, BCSC, Corenet) steering group which produces the annual Occupier Satisfaction Index (OSI).
