Henry Russell joined the College in January 2001 as course director for the RICS Diploma in Building Conservation. He read history at Christ’s College, Cambridge and then qualified as a chartered surveyor.
He subsequently studied for the Diploma in Building Conservation at the College. He is a full member of the Institute for Historic Building Conservation (IHBC). He has worked in private practice, which has included historic buildings and conservation work. He has contributed to college research projects concerned with heritage tourism and brownfield development.
He is a member of the RICS Building Conservation Group board, and was its chairman from 2005-8. He edited the RICS Building Conservation Journal for some years, and was a member of the Building Surveying Faculty Board from 2000-3. He is an assessor for the RICS South-East Awards.
He is a trustee of the Georgian Group, the amenity society which seeks to protect 18th and early 19th century building. He is also a trustee of the Woodchester Park Mansion Trust, a 19th century house in Gloucestershire, construction of which was never completed. The repair of the building gives opportunity for craft and professional training.
He is also involved in a number of other conservation organisations: chairman of Gloucester Diocesan Advisory Committee for the Care of Churches; member of the Education and Training Committee of the ICOMOS-UK (International Council on Monuments and Sites); trustee of COTAC (Conference on Training in Architectural Conservation).
Henry Russell was appointed an OBE in the New Years Honours List 2010 for public service.
