Property Supremos Honoured By Top Industry Awards

The work of industry stalwarts Professor Li Shirong and Ray O'Rourke was celebrated today (September 11) at the College of Estate Management's annual property awards ceremony.
Presented annually since 1987, the College's awards are in recognition of people or organisations that have made an outstanding contribution to the property sector. In this, the College of Estate Management's 90th year, awards were presented to both Professor Li of Chongqing University, China and to Tony Douglas, Chief Operating Officer of Laing O'Rourke, who collected the award on behalf of Mr O'Rourke, Chairman and Chief Executive.
Ray O'Rourke heads one of the most successful privately-owned construction companies in the UK. While playing an integral role in the strategic direction and management of the company, Mr O'Rourke also champions education within the property and construction sector. Speaking about receiving his award Mr O'Rourke said: "I'm very proud to receive this award as I believe strongly in the importance of quality further education in the property sector.
"CEM is a great institution which can help us through the difficult time we are currently experiencing. We need high educational standards and qualifications to ensure we have skilled people to meet the tough challenges ahead."
Arriving from China for the ceremony was Professor Li Shirong FCIOB FRICS FICE. Professor Li has combined her work as Professor of Construction Management at Chongqing University with her role in local government with responsibility for urban development and construction. As the first international President of the Chartered Institute of Building, Professor Li was honoured in recognition of the wide-reaching role which she fulfils in the industry.
The awards themselves take the form of owls, intricately sculpted in bronze by distinguished British sculptor, Philip Nathan, who has previously produced commemorative coins for The Royal Mint. Presenting the awards was Dr Ann Heywood, Principal of the College of Estate Management, who said: "In the current climate, where the property industry is facing testing conditions, CEM firmly believes in promoting the highest of professional standards. Today, we celebrate the achievements of two top property people who also hold these values."
