HK heritage seminar success

15 February 2010

A seminar held by the College of Estate Management (CEM) in Hong Kong on January 28, The Value of Built Heritage, was a massive success with over 170 delegates attending.

Adrian Smith, a tutor at CEM said: “Hong Kong’s combination of economic success and acute shortage of development land gives rise to one of the toughest environments for heritage survival. Successful models to nurture built heritage developed here will provide a template for saving heritage sites elsewhere in the world.”

Adrian was speaking at the seminar that was held to explore the importance built heritage plays in people’s lives, particularly through the experience of Hong Kong, and as a part of the college’s 90th birthday celebrations. Wendy Ng, research project officer from the Centre for Architectural Heritage Research, and Professor Ho Puay-peng, both from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, spoke about the challenges of preserving tenement houses in the city.

The event ended with a lively panel discussion that included Professor Ho Puay-peng, from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Maggie Brooke, Chair, Heritage Hong Kong Foundation, Gary Man, chairman of the RICS Valuation Professional Group and Ms Idi Chan Architectural Services Department of the HKSAR Government, HKIS Heritage Working Group - Building Surveying Division.

Hong Kong is the college’s most important international market for students studying professional property qualifications via distance learning courses.
